You can’t drive until you’re a certain age. You can’t make legal decisions, vote, or do most things independently until you reach a specific age. Minimum age requirements are everywhere —and I think they should be, they serve a great purpose.
But there are generally, there are almost no maximum age limits.
At some point, you start to realize that age minimums serve an important purpose: they protect public safety and help preserve the integrity of our institutions. And just like how turning 18 doesn’t magically make someone mature, there’s no exact age when someone becomes too old—but the effects of aging can gradually raise similar concerns.
That’s why I think that it is worth considering the other side of the age spectrum. Once someone reaches a certain age, I think there should be regular testing to ensure they’re still fit to drive. I also believe there should be age limits for holding public office and perhaps other responsibilities where cognitive and physical decline can have serious consequences to other people.
This was just another fleeting thought that I found the need to share.
